Dây thép literally means steel wire; in older Vietnamese it also referred to post-and-telegraph service, a telegram, sending one, and in dây thép nói, the telephone.

Dây thép trước hết là dây làm bằng thép. Trong lời Việt cũ, đặc biệt ở Nam Kỳ, hình ảnh đường dây liên lạc còn sinh ra nhiều cách gọi hoán dụ: nhà dây thép là cơ sở bưu điện và điện báo, một dây thép là bức điện, đánh hoặc gởi dây thép là gửi điện tín; khi tạo thành cụm danh từ như ống dây thép nói, dây thép nói là điện thoại. Phải phân biệt cụm sau với chuỗi dây thép + động từ nói trong câu như dây thép nói rõ lắm, có thể chỉ ‘bức điện nói/ghi rõ’. Không được nhập các lớp lịch sử này với mọi dây kim loại, thư thường, email hay tin nhắn hiện đại; cũng không mặc định dây thép vật liệu là dây chịu lực, dây gai hoặc dây có điện nếu câu không nói.
