Từ đa chức năng cần tách ba nét. Một là tính từ chỉ người, con vật, vẻ mặt hoặc cách phản ứng có khả năng gây hại, đe dọa hay hung hăng; dịch fierce, aggressive, dangerous hoặc intimidating theo đối tượng. Hai là tính từ/phó từ chỉ hiện tượng hay cảm giác có cường độ mạnh khác thường; dịch hard, heavily, violent, severe hoặc intense theo danh từ và động từ. Ba là phó từ mức độ rất quen trong tiếng Nam Bộ, thường đứng sau vị ngữ như đẹp dữ, đông dữ, thích dữ, nghĩa là rất/thật/ghê; dịch very, really hoặc so. Không được thấy chữ dữ rồi tự động gán hung ác, và không dùng nghĩa cường độ để phán xét tính cách một người.
